2018 marks the five year anniversary of the Health Insurance Marketplace. Also known as the “marketplace” or “exchange,” the Health Insurance Marketplace is a service that helps people shop for and enroll in affordable health insurance.

This year’s Open Enrollment period, or the time during which people can enroll in a health insurance plan through the Marketplace, runs from November 1, 2017, to December 15, 2017. Outside the Open Enrollment Period, people can only enroll in a health insurance plan if they qualify for a Special Enrollment Period through certain life events such as getting married, having a baby, or losing other health coverage.

Financial help with premiums and cost-sharing (help with out-of-pocket costs like co-pays and deductibles) are still available to consumers this year.

Because the time period to sign up for a health plan through the Marketplace is limited, it is important that all those eligible for health insurance through the Marketplace know about enrollment and the resources available to them. All consumers, new and renewing, should return to the Health Insurance Marketplace ( during Open Enrollment to explore their options and enroll in health coverage.

  • Legal Aid NC Navigators: Legal Aid NC has a network of navigators across the state, including Chatham County.
